Learn how to make proper structured data tables. We'll examine how to "clean" typical data sets having common problems. Our goal is to help you go from novice to proficient on the topics covered.
- We will reverse engineer data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics
- TRIM will be used to eliminate unwanted spaces
- TRANSFORM will be shown to convert columnar data into row data
- TEXT IMPORT WIZARD will parse data delivered as CSV
- TEXT TO COLUMNS will use delimiters to separate data in a single column to multiple columns
- ADVANCED FIND AND REPLACE will get rid of extraneous characters
- ZIP Codes with missing leading zeros will be fixed
- REMOVE DUPLICATES will get rid of duplicate rows in a table
- FLASH FILL uses Artificial Intelligence to pattern match and fill down
- DATE and TIME calculations will be explained
This is the first session in a full week of data workshops given by internationally recognized experts presented by the University Libraries.
Workshops are offered at no charge to UB faculty, staff and students. All workshops in this series will be presented in room 310 of Capen Hall inside Silverman Library. Please bring your laptop to these sessions, as workstations will not be provided.
