Collective Experiments in Remote Learning Online

The past six months have seen all of us—students, faculty, and staff—cast into the space of remote work and learning. We have faced new tools and new features of old tools. We have encountered new technology challenges connecting with our students and colleagues from home. Many of us have faced other kinds of social, psychological, cultural, and material challenges negotiating these tasks.

Being part of a collective experiment (to borrow a term from  Bruno Latour) means being in the middle of a mess where no one is really in charge. The driving ethos of some of the most powerful technology corporations has been to “move fast and break things.” Alongside the entrepreneurs of Silicon Valley, there are Russian agents undermining US elections, fake news publishers, bitcoin miners, gold farmers, social media influencers, and more: there appears to be no end to the list of those seeking some advantage in the algorithmic glitches of our lurching digital collective experiment. With remote learning we find ourselves among them in new and intensive ways. Even as we seek to connect with our students and foster community among them we also draw them further into this experiment, sharing their thoughts, voices, faces, and private spaces with a networked collective.

In this presentation/workshop, I will elaborate on this concept of collective experiments in remote learning in the context of my own teaching and draw on the experiences shared by other faculty across SUNY in the dozen or so workshops in which I participated this summer. I then hope we can discuss how our varied digital expertise might be turned toward these matters of concern to better represent our interests both in the short-term necessity for remote learning and the longer term prospects of digital pedagogies.
